Introduction:

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower in Paris – one of the Seven Wonders of the World was originally built as a part of an exhibition? As a matter of fact, historic and revolutionary inventions of the electric motor and printing press were first launched at world expos. Can you imagine?

Off lately, there has been a huge hullabaloo over Dubai Expo 2020. Let us drill down into the details and know what the hype is all about.

History:

Nearly two centuries ago, the world experienced its very first Expo. This revolutionary event brought in enthusiasm for innovation and discovery in many sectors. Such as technology, arts and architecture. Every five years, countries from all around the world come together to illuminate the spark of modern technology. Without a doubt, Expo is a platform for these nations to showcase the very best of their talent and inventions.

The first world Expo ever was hosted by majestic Great Britain. Printing Press was one of the most significant inventions at the time. In Dubai Expo 2020, the UK Pavillion will highlight the mind-blowing impact of AI (Artificial Intelligence) & space.
In addition to this, France hosted Expo a good six times. The iconic wonder of Eiffle Towel was constructed during the fourth time. To this day, the building looms over Paris at an incredible height of 300 metres.

Notably, the machinery use of electric motor was discovered in 1873, at the Vienna Expo in Austria. This dependable and large-scale use of electricity was a striking invention since most machines were powered by steam.

What is Dubai Expo 2020?

Expo 2020 is a world expo hosted by Dubai, UAE. It is the first international expo to take place not only in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) but also the first in an Arab country. It is a global event. A celebration of innovation and great minds.

With 192 countries and 5 central pavilions, this world fair is on its life-transforming mission. Over 25 million people and 200 participants from around the globe are anticipated to attend the event. However, you will be shocked to know that this massive attendance is no big deal. Why? Since the previous fairs have had great attendance as well. Surprising! Furthermore, Dubai Expo 2020 is expecting a huge percentage of international attendees. Estimated statistics assume the rate to be as high as 70%. The Expo is banking on its attendance to have more than 50% foreigners. This makes it the most international fair of all time.

The Bids

Dubai competed against Yekaterinburg in Russia, Izmir in Turkey as well as Sao Paulo in Brazil to be the host of Expo 2020. On November 27, 2013, in a popular vote, the city was announced as the winner by the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) general assembly in Paris. It is an intergovernmental organization that is in charge of overseeing world expos. The entire nation danced in joy at this grand victory. Fireworks lit up the sky from the world’s tallest building – Burj Khalifa. Besides, all the educational institutions across the country enjoyed a national holiday on the following day.

Worthy of note, Dubai Expo 2020 was originally from October 20, 2020, to April 10, 2021. But, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, new dates for the event were announced: October 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. Wondering why Expo 2020 and not Expo 2021? Despite being postponed, organizers decided on the name to be the same for branding, visibility and marketing purposes. Hence, Expo 2020.

Slogan and sub-themes

Driven by not only a purpose but also a futuristic vision, the slogan and theme of the event are immersive and one-of-a-kind. “Connecting minds creating the future” is the slogan. In addition to this, there are 3 sub-themes – opportunity, mobility and sustainability. Each has its own pavilion.

Opportunity

Every idea is worth sharing. Even one person can be a catalyst to change that can revamp society for a better tomorrow. The opportunity district encourages people to unleash their potential. It creates an excellent networking prospect for change-makers. It holds the ‘Youth empowerment, ‘The Good Place’ and ‘Create connections’ chambers.  The country pavilion experiences that spark a sounder future for all include ‘build a more balanced world’ (Ukraine Pavilion), ‘reveal a new perspective’ (Monaco Pavilion) and ‘co-create with AI’ (UK Pavilion). Not to forget, the Switzerland and Malawai Pavilions. They depict the theme – ‘take a hike’ and ‘see lives change respectively.

Mobility

Mobility restrictions are yet alive in the face of development. Even today, some parts of the world are off the beaten track due to a lack of access to vehicles and basic infrastructure. The pavilions in the mobility district talk about the transportation of tomorrow. They are a word of the future, on the whole – A world with an easy physical movement for individuals. A space where the path and distribution of goods and services are fit. Additionally, where there is digital connectivity through IoT.

Dubai Expo 2020 gives you an event to ‘navigate the universe’ (Australia Pavilion), ‘uncover future minds’ (Russia Pavilion) as well as ‘mix virtual and reality’ (Republic of Korea Pavilion).

Sustainability

The sustainability sub-theme is an effort to increase awareness about the impact of global warming on our planet Earth. Projects are indeed a part of development. However, in the light of advancement, the health of the planet must not be risked. We need environment-friendly projects that can reverse the huge influence of global warming. For the same reason, the world is coming up with practical and real-life solutions. A rational approach can ensure sustainable means of living with less environmental damage.

Besides, you will experience something unique at each pavilion in the sustainability district. You can dive into ocean depths and wander through forest roots. You can either walk through a waterfall (Brazil Pavilion) or water the desert (Czech Republic Pavilion). Enter a rainforest (Singapore Pavilion), wear cutting-edge devices (Germany Pavilion) or explore a miniature world (Netherlands Pavilion). When you experience nature first-hand and up close, you will want to play a part in creating a more sustainable planet. And, this is exactly what this sub-theme aims at.

Mascots:

There are 6 Mascots: Salama, Latifa, Rashid, Alif, Opti and Terra.

Salama is a Ghaf tree – the national tree of the UAE. Furthermore, Salama, Latifa and Rashid go on an interesting journey guided by Alif, Opti and Terra. These three bots resemble Star Wars’ BB – 8 characters. In addition to this, they are guardian mascots for the pavilions of mobility, opportunity and sustainability respectively.

Added information:

One of the biggest attractions is the UAE pavilion. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, an architect from Spanish, the pavilion depicts an outline of Falcon – UAE’s national bird. Also, China, Africa and the Pacific area have the largest pavilions. Dubai Expo 2020 is expected to boost the UAE economy by AED 122.6 billion between 2013 and 2031.  This economic turnover will open doors to 905,200 full-time jobs.
